Description
A watching brief was undertaken during the construction of a 2-storey extension to the rear (west) of 67 Castle Road. The footings trenches were inspected, initially when excavated to 1.4m, and subsequently when building inspectors required excavation to natural ground. Natural ground was reached at 1.4m on the south side and 1.8m on the north. At the centre point of the north wall trench natural was reached at 2.25m, the fill of a medieval feature was dug out to achieve this. Various bits of post-medieval brick and tile, oyster shell, and quite an appreciable amount of animal bone was observed. Long bones indicating food waste were observed, also a band of pinkish material which may have been opus signinum debris, if so the Roman material would have been truncated by late medieval or post medieval activity. The site is only 100m from the presumed location of Grey Friars and the food waste and domestic debris may be associated with this. <1>
