Description

A watching brief was undertaken during the digging of stanchion pits and cellar refurbishment at 67-70 North Hill, formerly Belfast Linens, now the new Post Office. Boudican destruction layers were identified at 1.85m down in the eastern stanchion hole. The builders reported that material from this was red burnt daub / clay, and they also reported charcoal or a wooden plank at the base of the deposit. Boudican deposits were also recorded in the west stanchion hole, lying over a pre-Boudican build up layer over natural sand. Above the Boudican deposit was a possible clay wall in the form of rectangular lumps of light brown clay daub. There was also a Tudor? Brick wall higher up the section. The cellar in the centre of the site was dug out, with natural sand below, in the south section of the cellar two post medieval pits were observed, one tile lined. <1>
