Description

A watching brief was undertaken at 161-171 Magdalen Street, the report notes 'Several visits were made to the site (during unspecified construction work). Observations along the Magdalen Street frontage revealed no significant archaeological remains, though several modern brick and concrete wall footings were noted. One of these had an area of cobbles immediately to its east side and it seems probable that this wall is part of the former east wall of the 'Waterloo' Public House. The north -western area of the site (fronting onto part of Childwell Lane) had already been reduced to about 2.0m into natural sand (in preparation to form a car parking area) but the sections that remained did not indicate any significant archaeology had been present. The natural sand was sealed by mixed post-medieval/modern deposits, most of which appeared to be dumped material levelling the slope and retained by the brick wall on the south side of the lane. Some pits containing post-medieval/modern material were observed in the east-west section of the southern edge of the reduced area cut into the natural sand. General observations across the rest of the site area did not reveal any features of significance. A local metal detectorist later showed some photographs of a feature he had observed on this area, this was almost certainly part of a brick built well shaft with a brick built domed capping. <1>
