Description

About 140m of the surviving wall of St John's Abbey was destroyed in 1972 as part of the works for the new St Botolphs roundabout. The wall stood to a height of about 2.75m and tapered in width from about 1.0m at the base to about 0.6m at the top. It had been thought that the wall was of 16th century date because it appeared to have been built of stone and 16th century brick. However what had previously been visible of the wall turned out to have been a refacing about 0.50m thick added to a wall of much older date. See <1> for full report. Some of the stone was photographed (these were deposited in Colchester Museum).
