Description

A watching brief was undertaken in the former garden of Eastwell House at the corner of Lexden Road and West Lodge Road. Foundation trenches for a block of flats revealed destruction debris and foundations representing one or more Roman buildings. An intact Roman cremation urn was also uncovered. An access road cutting at the southern boundary of the site was investigated and found to contain a stratigraphically early gravel deposit possibly associated with the Roman Road previously identified at Gurney Benham House and 26 Lexden Road.<1> Small scale excavation still in post excavation 2002.
