The site lies on the corner of Lexden Road & West Lodge Road and was formerly occupied by the Observer Corps. Development from 1994 to 1997 involved conversion of No 22 to flats, demolition of the adjoining modern Observer Corps buildings and construction of a new block of flats to the west of no 22. In September 1994, a watch on the removal of the substantial concrete foundations of the Observer Corps bunker resulted in recovery of pottery and tile associated with the sparse survival of Roman deposits (recorded by James Fawn) in the east garden area directly south of No 22. A controlled machine evaluation in January 1995 (see ECC2010) produced evidence for the extensive loss of Roman levels over the south-western part of the site with inconclusive results from the north-western area. The subsequent watching brief on construction works for the new flats (August 1996- Feb 1997) produced no surprises. Natural sand generally lay at a similar level to that of the West Lodge Road / Lexden Road pavements and was either directly sealed by late deposits of topsoil or, in the northernmost foundation trench, was below a thin layer of cover loam. Several indistinct interruptions were observed within the sand, but no clearly early features were discernable. At the terraced southern boundary of the site the face of the elevated ground was cut back to reveal a fresh section in which the elevated levels were composed of 1.4m dark greyish brown sandy loam. Beneath this material the lowest 35cm of the section was composed of a yellowish brown sandy soil which lay at approximately the same level as West Lodge Road. This lighter soil contained rare mortar flecks and is possibly of early date.<1>
