Description

A watching brief was undertaken on the west side of Norman Way, immediately south of the footpath (continuing up Park Road). An east west ditch was visible after machine stripping of topsoil prior to the construction of a surface car-park. The ditch was small, 1.4-1.5m wide in the machined area, 0.55m (east) 0.6m (west) below the modern ground level. It was not possible to section the ditch, but the peg-tile fragments were observed in the backfill. The latter was a greyish-Brown sandy clay loam; the ditch cut brownish yellow sandy clay loam (natural). The ditch was visible further west as a slight depression in the playing field surface extending for a minimum of 60m parallel to the footpath. The ditch seems likely to be medieval or later in date and thus not associated with the ?early Roman ditch noted by Hull (See Roman Colchester, 1958, p271-3 & Colchester Archaeological Report 11, 62-3.) <1>
