Description
A watching brief was held during the groundwork for a new multi-storey car park at Queen Street. Archaeological work was restricted to observing the stanchion holes dug for the new structure, which resulted in the destruction of about 10% of the buried deposits on the site. Well preserved remains of Roman buildings were found to survive much more extensively than expected and from these observations the archaeological levels were shown to be comparatively shallow, lying between 0.5m and 2.5m below the ground level.<1>
Philip Crummy recalls visiting the site and examining the stanchion holes but cannot remember observing any archaeology. (Pers comm. 22/10/99)
