A watching brief was undertaken during residential development at Spurgeon Street. The high ground in the south-western part of the site was reduced by up to 2.5m. The resultant sections along the south and west boundaries contained up to 1m of relatively late redeposited topsoil above natural gravely sand. Elsewhere modern foundations and extensive areas of surface concrete had been removed. No archaeologically significant features were discernible, although the underlying soils were heavily obscured as the result of site traffic <1>
