Description

A possible mortar floor of Roman date was noted in the south section of a foundation trench for a small outbuilding in the garden between 45 and 46 North Hill. The mortar lay at a depth of 20cm and was sealed by modern garden topsoil. Beneath the mortar was a substantial deposit of sandy clay loam make-up which extended beyond the bottom of the trench. A large part of the trenching to the north exposed disturbance in the form of modern pipe cuttings. The north-western corner contained sandy clay loam of similar appearance to the make-up previously noted. Here, the deposit was found at an overall depth of 0.6m, sealed by a 0.35m dump of burnt daub which contained Roman pottery (find no X682). From this limited observation, this point on North Hill appears to contain a substantial depth of Roman stratigraphy, the uppermost levels of which have been removed by later terracing. <1>
