Description

A watching brief was undertaken where soil clearance for an external fire escape crossed the projected course of the town wall. Nothing of the town wall was revealed, the only early wall material in evidence was incorporated into the facing of a tall wall at the eastern end of the yard which stands 2.5m south of and at an angle to the predicted course of the town wall. The lowest 2.4m of the facing is composed largely of reused septaria and occasional Roman tile, with two courses of red brick laid as headers 50-70cms above the yard floor. <1><2>
