Description
A watching brief was undertaken during the construction of a rectangular extension at the rear of the Waggon and Horse Pub on North Hill. Roman deposits survived close to the surface over much of the site, and later disturbance was fairly limited. Presumably some later deposits, including 'dark earth' had been terraced away in more recent times, although it is possible that post-Roman deposits were comparatively meagre due to the position of the site near the top of the Hill. The Roman deposits included a weathered gravel surface, possibly a street or a yard from the fortress, also a well defined charred Boudican horizon at a depth of between 0.95 and 1.1m, and extensive later Roman deposits. <1>
