Description

CAT received a report from the site owner of Colchester Camping Site on Cymbeline Way that pottery was discovered when digging a soak away pit at the site. The sherds were from two Roman vessels: A pre-Flavian jar and a undated thin bodied Roman vessel. These were described as being found at a depth of 1.5m close together in a thin layer sealed by horizontal layers of gravel and clay. The find spot was a few meters to the east of a newly built toilet block. A note by Carl Crossan of CAT comments ' From the location and stratigraphy the finds seem more likely to be part of a more extensive spread of Roman material sealed by later made up levels rather than pit fill.' The pottery was returned to the finder. <1>
