Description

A watching brief was held during the redevelopment of 43a East Street. Groundworks consisted of stanchion holes and 0.6m wide trenches for external walls for an extension to be built in the former yard to the south. The area at the front of the property was found to have suffered extensive disturbance from the earlier installation of a large underground storage tank and from terracing which extended to depths of up to 0.5m exposing the natural subsoil. At one point along the street frontage the natural gravel was sealed by a 0.5m thick deposit of dark brown sandy loam which extended as far as the pavement concrete. The only significant feature was a 0.15m thick spread of gravely loam which lay between natural subsoil and a 0.5m thick deposit of sandy loam . The gravel may represent a yard from an earlier building of unknown date.<1>
