Description

A watching brief was maintained during groundwork for the conversion of an existing building and construction of three other shops at 10-16 Sir Isaacs Walk. Conversion of the existing building required underpinning of the north-west, south wall and east wall. Underpinning did not exceed a depth of 0.5m. Trenches within the building were also shallow in depth and narrow in width. A build up of post-medieval soil was revealed. Foundation trenches for the new shops were also observed but were less than 1.0m deep. A similar build up of soil was noted with no evidence of features. Two drains were inserted but did not exceed a depth of 1.2m. No Roman levels were disturbed. A further visit was made on 15/11/1992. Negative evidence.<1>
