Description

A watching brief was maintained during dredging work at Lexden Lodge Moat. The work typically involved the excavation of a channel 4m wide and 1.25m deep, along the southern and western lengths of the moat from the bridge to the north corner. The remaining north-eastern stretch was to be dredged at a later date. The channel was offset toward the inner side of the moat leaving a shelf of unexcavated silt along the lower part of the outer bank. At the south corner a cutting for a machine access ramp formed a section through the outer bank in which an earlier moat cutting could be seen. In mid April, the dredging work resumed without a watching brief and included clearance of the broad north-eastern stretch. <1>
