Description

A watching brief was maintained during groundwork for an extension to the east wing of the Eld Lane Baptist Church. The three main foundation trenches were all machine dug to depths of between 2.5m to 3m at a width of 0.65m. Despite disturbance of early levels by an extensive complex of post-Roman pits, the eastern trench revealed evidence of the possible eastern edge of a north-south robber trench, consisting of a three metre length of mortar fragments at the bottom of the trench, a 0.65m wide east-west Roman wall foundation and a row of 18th /19th century graves. The western trench was found to be pitted with no extant Roman features although the southern 9.5m of the trench was concreted before inspection. In the southern trench the pitting extended to depths of 1.6m to 1.8m. South of the new foundations a drain connection trench was inspected when dug to a depth of 1.1m. Opposite the south-east corner of the church the trench cut a c.18th/19th century brick lined burial vault containing two coffins. Occasional visits were made during underpinning work carried out beneath the north and west wall of the east wing but the narrow trenches could not be properly inspected. Those observed appeared to be pitted to a depths of 43.5 to 4.5m.<1>
