Description

A watching brief was held during groundwork for alterations to the rear of a listed building. The renovations included demolition of an existing rear building, extension to the rear and formation of a new shop front. Two trenches and a stanchion hole were excavated by builders. The stanchion hole contained black fill to a depth of approximately 1m together with a 17th century jar and dish. The trench in the middle of the property revealed natural sand beneath a concrete floor. The other trench revealed a drain pipe trench in approximately 70cm of black soil with 18th and 19th century pottery. <1>
