Description

A watching brief was maintained during the groundwork for an extension to No.107 Crouch Street. The ground level of an area approximately 10m x 18m was reduced to 0.4m below the yard and adjoining house. Roman levels were exposed in the south-east corner of the site at approximately the same level as the yard, gradually rising to the north at the same inclination as the modern ground level. The Roman layers were very mixed but mainly consisted of a thick deposit of pale yellowish brown silty clay with occasional burnt patches. No features were recognised. Overall the site was cleared to between 0.3 and 0.5m below the level of the yard. The new foundation trenches were between 0.7 and 0.9m deep from the reduced level. Natural was reached at 0.8m below the yard level at the northern end.<1>
