Description

A watching brief was held during building groundwork at the rear of the disused brewery site on the north side of East Hill. Several visits produced no noteworthy archaeological deposits. Redevelopment for housing involved the demolition of a modern outbuilding to the rear of the brewery. This had a large cellar but observations of the sides was not possible. Observation of foundation trenches revealed recent dump and topsoil layers sealing natural sand and gravel. A site immediately north of the brewery site, off Exeter road was observed at the same time, but did not reveal anything of archaeological significance.<1>
