Description
A watching brief maintained during the demolition of the north wing of the Old Library on the corner of Shewell Road and Culver Street, and during subsequent groundwork on the site, failed to reveal archaeological deposits of any significance. The area between the old library and Culver Street was almost totally destroyed by 19th -20th century cellars, probably associated with Mumfords iron foundry. Work to the east of this area revealed thick deposits of dark earth.<1>
