Description
A watching brief was held during the groundwork for the installation of a lift shaft at the rear of one of the blocks of the Balkerne Gardens Trust old peoples home. Observation of a completed workman's trench revealed a series of Roman deposits. The trench measured c.2.2m north-south by c.2.35m east-west and was c.1.75m deep, reaching natural sand over most of the trench. The face of the trenches western section was well preserved and the Roman deposits were recorded. A series of largely Boudican layers were observed, although there was no clear-cut structural evidence. A series of sand dumps of military or early colonial date was sealed by a thin gravel surface (yard or street?). This was sealed by a thin layer of sandy clay loam dump , the upper surface of which had been burnt, almost certainly in AD60/1. Several pieces of charcoal were found in the burnt surface which was in turn sealed by a layer of Boudican destruction debris 0.4m thick. The pre-Boudican deposits were at the edge of a Roman pit. The upper part of the section was more disturbed.<1>
