Description
An urn of dark grey ware, containing burnt bones is said to have been found in Maidenburgh Street, dating to 3rd -4th century. There is a question mark over this find as it is curious that it should be located within the walled town. The urn was donated by Miss F.J. Bucke COLEM 1951.282 <1> Hull records that 'Further inquiries concerning this pot revealed that Mr Bucke, the father of the donor, died many years ago and had a wine and spirit store in Maidenburgh Street, Colchester. His daughters always understood that some 67 years ago when a portion of the rear of the property was rebuilt this pot was found in the ground. The store was , it is believed, on the Town side of what is now Daniells & Sons Breweries Office' (This information was supplied by Alderman L.E. Dansie, J.P.) <2>
