Description

A watching brief was held at No's 2-3 Stanwell Street. during the erection of a new building. A small section under the modern pavement was visible in the side of the trench dug for the new wall along the northern boundary of the site. This revealed a sequence of layers the earliest of which may have been Roman. The foundation of the original north wall was mainly 19th century but it incorporated several pieces of worked limestone including medieval carved stone capitals.<1>
