Description

Roman street metalling was recorded during a watching brief on a 2m deep road trench situated on the line of the south carriageway of the Balkerne Gate. A series of four layers of metalling were observed. These extended from a depth of 1.15m to 1.5m below the surface of the road south of 'The Hole in the Wall' public house. Beneath the metalling was a thick layer of loamy sand, probably make-up, which continued below the bottom of the trench.<1>
