Description

No 51 High Street (formerly Messrs Joys) was pulled down in 1959 and rebuilt. The demolition uncovered the whole of the large cellar under the front and adjoining the High Street. It was walled with thick stone walls on all sides; the stone was small and un-even in size, and could hardly be called coursed, and there was a plentiful admixture of pieces of barn-roof tile. The material was poor and there was no noticeable Roman tile, so the stone may have been salvaged from earlier demolitions from which the best spoil had been removed. Rex Hull notes "later I was informed by Mr H.C. Calver that a strong stone wall 4ft thick was found running across the site and that it was made of 'black stone'. The foreman told me that it was of no great depth or strength.". <1>
