Description
A watching brief was maintained during redevelopment on the north corner of the junction of Maidenburgh Street and William's Walk. This was part of the Borough Council's Dutch Quarter Phase 3 residential housing scheme. Trenches dug for the new houses revealed archaeological information in five places.
An east-west foundation lay close to the pavement, its top being 400mm below the pavement level. To either side was soil and rubble. North-west of this foundation a stanchion hole was cut through a sequence of well-preserved Roman layers including a opus signinum floor overlying a layer of demolished daub walls which in turn overlay a layer of ?redeposited Boudican debris over natural sand. Street metalling was observed to the south-west of the foundation and further south was an area of sand and gravel which lay within 0.3m of the modern ground level. Part of a red tessellated pavement was revealed in the northern foundation trench for a new house at the south side of the junction of Maidenburgh Street and George Street. Disarticulated human bones were found by workmen above the pavement.<1>
