Description
A watching brief was held during the construction of an extension to the rear of Coral Bookmakers, St John's Street. A single trench, 1.1m by 1.2m deep was dug for a strip foundation. The upper part of the material which it cut through was all dark soil which, lower down, contained yellowish and brownish patches. "The base of the western leg of the trench cut brown sandy loam. The dark soil did not appear to be the fill of pits but rather a dump or an accumulation of topsoil." The dump included 2nd-3rd century and post-medieval pottery.<1>
