Description
A watching brief was held during the construction of a new office block at the west angle of Stanway Street and Southway. The building was constructed on piles. Contractors excavations showed a massive thickness (4m) of undifferentiated dark earth below which is grey clay. The upper meter appeared to be all 19th-20th century demolition debris including material derived from the construction of Southway in the early 1970s.<1>
