Description
A watching brief was maintained during the demolition of an office block and erection of new flats. The new building is supported on strip foundations 0.8m wide and 1.5m deep. Beneath the modern tarmac and concrete floors was a layer of brick rubble approx. 0.3m thick, which it was thought was derived from a demolished Victorian property bombed during the war. The rubble overlay topsoil which varied in thickness between 0.3m or more. Several topsoil filled features may have been graves although none were positively identified as such and no human remains were discovered. Several 19th-20th century pits and foundation trenches were located as was a backfilled well (unknown date). Some animal bones and 3rd/4th -century pottery were found at two places. A third group of finds located near the eastern part of the site, probably came from a pit or ?grave. Underlying the topsoil was natural sand and gravel. No other archaeological layers were observed.<1>
