Description

A watching brief was held along Maidenburgh Street during the redevelopment of a car park for council houses (Dutch Quarter Phase 2). A trench in the south-west corner of the site penetrated the underlying remains of the north-south Roman street. The metalling uncovered appeared to be that of the edge of a street or walkway rather than that of a proper street. At the west end was a pit or part of a large robber trench for a substantial north-south wall. At the east end of the site the street had been destroyed either by the castle's bailey ditch or a large post-roman pit.<1>
