Description

During the excavation of a telephone cable trench in April 1967 along the east side of Queen Street an east-west foundation of septaria and pale mortar was found opposite the entrance of St James' Church Hall. On its northern side was a thick layer of yellow clay acting as make up for a rough gravel surface. This layer produced two complete pots one of which had been placed upright in the ground with the mouth sealed by a tile. There was nothing inside the pot and it probably contained a foundation offering rather than a burial. One of the pots was a plain grey cooking pot and could be any date from the late first to the fourth century and the other was a variant of Hull's form 279b (2nd/3rd century) <1>A telephone cable trench dug along Queen Street in 1967 revealed a masonry building of apparently 2nd century date under the east pavement opposite St James' Hall. There was no sign of any earlier activity prior to the construction of this building <2>.
