Description
A watching brief was held during the construction of a rear extension at No.39-40 North Hill. Trenches for foundations were dug down to a depth of 1m. "They revealed many post-medieval pits cutting through what appeared to be a dumped sandy clay (Roman) layer containing a few lumps of white mortar, oyster shells and one redeposited lump of opus signinum floor. The sandy clay varied from being quite clean on the north side to rather mixed and disturbed on the south side. A layer of topsoil 0.25m thick overlay the clay. The fragment of floor and sandy clay, presumably from daub walls, indicate the likely presence of the remains of a Roman building on this site."<1>
