Description
A watching brief was held during the demolition of the former mortuary building at Rye Gate and the construction of a new house on the site. The mortuary's foundations proved to have been very shallow and built on topsoil which exceeded 1m in depth. In one place a Roman layer was uncovered consisting of brown and yellow sandy clay with a few mortar and oyster flecks.<1>
