Description

In 1979 the existing sewer in Church Street was partly replaced. A new pipe was laid which extended from the east end of Church Street, westward along the centre of the street and joined the sewer laid in 1973 through St Mary's Steps (see ECC341). At the same time as the sewer pipe was laid some alterations were taking place at St Mary's Church and both operations were covered by the same watching brief. Roman street metalling was seen at the base of the sewer trench from the manhole closest to St May's Steps to the next manhole to the east. A section was recorded near this eastern manhole which may have included a demolished wall. Roman deposits were recovered at a depth of 1.25m beneath the modern road surface. No significant finds were made during the operations on the church which included laying an external drain around the southwest corner of the building.<1>
