Description
A watching brief was held during the construction of new shops along St Nicholas Passage. "A strip trench for a foundation was dug around all four sides of the site. The rest of the site was lowered by about 0.5 m. The trench was about 2.5 m deep and was cut through dark soil (fill of many pits?). Two holes were dug in the centre of the site to a depth of 6 or 7 feet. Nothing of significance was observed in any of the contractor's excavations apart from a possible pre-Boudican daub wall, burnt in AD 60/1, a burnt surface of a ?pit nearby, and a foundation of flint - all at a depth of about 2 m."<1>
