Description
A watching brief was held during the excavation of trenches along the south wall of St Peter's Church, North Hill, dug to reduce problems caused by damp. "Five short trenches, 0.6 m wide and about 1 m deep, were dug between the buttresses along the south side of the church. Four of the trenches revealed no significant remains. The fifth and most easterly trench revealed the base of an earlier wall and buttress of roughly squared stones and a few Roman tiles. The squared stones were up to 0.5 m wide and the uppermost part of the wall (or foundation) was 1.0 m below the bevelled line of modern cement there. The early buttress underlay the brick buttress where it rose to within 0.62 m of the bevelled line of the modern cement."<1>
