Description

A large Roman altar of sandstone was found in excavations for a sewer in Balkerne Lane, just outside the SW angle of the town wall and about 6ft below the surface.<1> It is said that it was found in the town ditch.<2> See also <3><4><5><6><7><8> In a duplicate SMR report it is described as firestone or 'greensand'.
