Description

Part of a Roman military tombstone found just west of Essex County Hospital.<1> Marked on 1876 OS map.<2> Part of a Purbeck marble tombstone 10 x 8 x 1.5" found in 1821 on the site of the Essex and Colchester Hospital, Colchester. Now among the Disney Marbles, in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. Inscription reads 'To the spirits of the departed; in this mound lie buried the bones of a young man much regretted…everyone…Mucianus'.<3>
