Description

"Proposals to site two single-storey extensions in adjacent rear yards on the line of the Roman town wall prompted the Trust to excavate a trial trench to establish whether the new foundations would pose a threat to the fabric of the underlying wall. The trench in the yard of 1A Eld Lane, extended to a depth of 0.8 m. No in situ wall masonry was found. Five auger holes up to 1.2 m deep were then bored into the bottom of the trench. None made contact with a solid feature. Foundation trenches were subsequently cut to a depth of 1.0 and 0.8 m respectively in the yards of No's 1 and 1A Eld Lane. Again no evidence of the town wall was encountered".<1>
