Description

A watching brief was maintained during the excavation of a trench for a gas main around the perimeter of the Balkerne Gardens central lawn. The gas board trench was 0.65 metres deep and revealed a thick featureless layer of dark greyish brown sandy loam which contained various sherds of 3rd to 4th century date. A patch of burnt daub was exposed at the bottom of the trench in front of No. 5 and 6 Balkerne Gardens. Elsewhere the topsoil extended beyond the bottom of the trench.<1>
