Description

Three graves recovered by local resident at Hillyfields after bulldozing by the County Council- TL987255. Grave (1) was located near the South West corner of the field. Grave (2) was approximately 100 yards south of (1) and was retained by the finder, Ros Dunnett records 'almost certainly part of one group, but no record of burnt bones- mid first century'. Grave three was 100ft east of the end of Sussex Road and 80ft west of the hedge 'Probably a grave group consisting of a ring needed flagon (complete) black cooking pot form 265 (complete) and form 29 Samian bowl, again no bones or ashes'. The museum received grave (1), grave (3) was retained by Roger Shields, Endsleigh Court, Colchester, no record of grave two's whereabouts.<1>
