Description

A watching brief was held during the construction of an extension to 49 North Hill. About 1.4m of topsoil was stripped from the site exposing the uppermost surviving levels of archaeological deposits. The topsoil was very dark brown. Post-Roman features included a brick soak away of 18th or 19th century date, a well, a cellar and a pit in the north east corner of the site. Foundation trenches were dug along all four sides of the site and two more were dug east- west across the centre (one across the well). These trenches were dug down a further 0.75m. The bottom of the cellar was 1.5m below ground level. Three Roman foundations and parts of mortar bases for tessellated floors were uncovered. The width of wall foundations suggested a house as opposed to a public building.<1> Finds included several sherds of Thetford-type ware.<2>
