Description

Colchester Archaeological Trust building survey undertaken due to renovation of two-celled timber-framed building. The building is a two celled structure. The front block by the street is of three storeys including an attic with a dormer window. The roof lies east-west and is of the side purlin type; it may not be original. The rear block is not all of one build; the ridge top plates and first floor are all at a slightly lower level than the equivalent features in the front block. Although the feel and style of the timbering of both blocks is very similar. It seems as if the rear block is the earlier of the two. The roof at the rear lies north-south. All the couples were pegged and collared but there is no sign of a collar purlin or crown post. The rear block does not contain an attic, only secondary timbers inserted to support a later ceiling. The valley board in the roof at the junction of the two blocks is a ?re-used fascia board carved with foliage and fruit. <1>
