Description

In the entry for: LITTLE HORKESLEY SCHOOL ROAD TL 93 SE 3/105 Priory Farmhouse the list entry shall be amended to read: TL 93 SE LITTLE HORKESLEY SCHOOL ROAD 3/105 The Priory II* (star) 2. Wing of Cluniac Priory, including end wall of priest's house, later farmhouse, now house. C14 east wall, early C16 remainder of south wing, reroofed probably in C17 with C17-C18 L-wing to north, some early C19 windows to east but mainly refenestrated in C20. Timberframed now plastered with hipped or gabled tiled roofs and 3 brick chimneystacks. Main range, which is surviving range of Priory with east wall of priest's house, is aligned east-west with L-wing to north. Two storeys; irregular fenestration. East end has 2 early C19 12-pane sashes, the remainder mainly C20 casements except for 5 windows with leaded lights to the south, including 2 restored ovolo-moulded wooden mullioned windows of c1600. C20 doors. Interior east wall to east of chimney stack is the only surviving wall of an earlier building, probably of C14 date, judging by the long passing brace, and probably a priest's house. The remainder of this wing is early C16, was originally jettied to the west and had an internal 'cloister'. A particularly interesting feature was a wide timber fireplace on each floor, some way between a smoke bay and a timber stack, the one on the ground floor having been moved a few feet and reused in the late C16 brick chimney. Spine beam to living room has 4 inch chamfer one side with chamfered floor joists to one side and joists of square section on the other side. Staircase to west is a winder staircase with early C18 balusters. First floor has a series of jowled posts, curved tension braces, sockets for diamond mullioned windows and shutter grooves, stone corbel to bedroom supporting chamfered beam with lambs tongue stops, resited C14 ogee moulded wooden arch with bowtell moulding, old floorboards and 2 centred arched doorcase. Attic storey has C16 or C17 plank door and C17-C18 roof with pegged rafters, tie beam and side purlins. LITTLE HORKESLEY SCHOOL ROAD 1. 5214 Priory Farmhouse TL 93 SE 3/105 II GV 2. Medieval probably C16, and extensive modernisation. North aspect on L-plan with a wing extending north from west end. Timber-framed and plastered with ridged and hipped roofs, peg-tiled. Windows mixed, numerous, and of irregular spacing mostly modern. Three red brick chimney stacks one on each hip apex and one central to north wall. South elevation has eaves and range of 2 sets of 3, small pane casements, left, 2 sets 4, small pane casements right, a blank bay and one pair of sashes. Ground storey similarly casemented, and modern doors in second bay to the left. Listing NGR: TL9599632109
