Description
FORDHAM WAKES COLNE ROAD (A604) 1. 5214 TL 92 NW 7/34 Wash Farmhouse II* 2. C13 and later house with east wing of C18 in red brick of Flemish bonding. The main range extending north to south is framed in timber and now rendered. Roofs north to south ridged and gabled, east to west ridged and hip ended, all clad in machine made clay tile. The north-east elevation has 3 pairs of 8 pane hornless sash windows in exposed boxes 2 over 1, with modern front door on right. The timber range is well and heavily framed and has a roof unique to date in so far as published facts are available. This has jowled queen-posts carrying wide flat collars with side purlins laid flat over them, a flat-laid ridge piece mounted on bifurcated king-posts cut from the crown-forks of oaks. These are finely stop-chamfered, and the purlins are arch-braced beneath in the plane of the queen-posts. Two bays of this roof are complete and in pristine condition.
