Description
DEDHAM THE DRIFT 1. 5214 (footpath) Southfields The Flemish Cottages [formerly listed as Southfields (now 7 cottages)] TM 0531 27/11 23.6.52 I 2. C15 and later house of courtyard plan as a result of its pattern of growth by separate units. Largely 2 storeyed with exposed timber frame, ridge and gable roofs clad with pegtiles. One chimney stack has 2 octagonal shafts, at the south-west and is all of the stated date, although of several successive builds. The main range bounds the east side of the yard and was jettied to both east and west with a dragon-beam at the south end. This range has tripartite windows and roll-moulded joists. The joists have soffit-tenons, and the top-plates have edge-halved and bridle-butted scarfs. The south range built next to it also has tripartite windows, but with scribed ovolo mullions - of circa 1580/90. The north range with its gatehouse was built as tall and unstoreyed. It is evident that the north-east return of the plan was built last, and to complete the courtyard enclosure, since an end-jetty can be seen in the length of the western range, with blocked windows visible inside (RCHM 2) ERO (D/ABW 40/37): Will of 1583, specifies Gatehouse and various chambers.
