Description
DEDHAM CROWN STREET 1. 5214 Barfields Almshouses TM 0531 27/12 II GV 2. Date stone inscribed: 'This asylum for widows was built and endowed by Mrs Mary Barfield 1834' a long range in red brick with slated ridged and gabled roof and crosswings at each end. Three red brick chimney stacks spaced along ridge. Two doors on front elevation and 2 in the returns of the wings; those on the front have gabled porches. A range of 6 pairs of round-headed windows under red brick arches, with paned sashes and arched fanlights, along front. The central 4 pairs of windows have dormer-gables with fretted vergeboards and finials, also crested blue ridge bonnets which occur also along ridge, of wings. The windows in the wing gables have fretted roundels above and between their 2 lights - these of either terracotta or painted iron.
