Description
BOXTED CHURCH STREET 1. 5214 Church of St Peter TL 93 SE 3/82 7.4.65 I GV 2. Comprising a west tower which at its base is of the mid C12 and built of indurated conglomerate. This was repaired in red brick at its top stage, in irregular English bond, embattled and stone coped, with angle buttresses. The tower incorporates much original timber, and door-leaves and their cases. Nave: tall with ridge and gable roof peg-tiled with some crested ridge bonnets. North and south aisles added circa 1300 when arcades were cut through the walls - arches and 'piers' chamfered. Norman windows blocked at this time, and a clerestorey cut higher up. South aisle has 2 cinque foil windows in single centred heads and a dormer-height bay window. South porch medieval, timber framed and heavily restored, with roof of early type. Chancel perpendicular re-pointed and with re-set windows and details: late C14. This has angle buttresses. Much re-used red brick (possibly Roman) and 2 trefoiled windows in east end of nave above chancel apex. North aisle: early English circa 1300 with much indurated conglomerate, north door bricked up. Inside: crown-post roof of circa 1300 on moulded tie-beams with scissor-braced couples. Gallery on 4 slender cast iron columns dated 1836. Brick floor, and monument to Richard Blackmore, chest, ironbound of uncertain date.
