Description

During WWII this area of West Mersea was a coastal artillery site with two 4.7" guns made in Japan in 1918. This gun emplacement, No. 2, stands at the back of the beach and has been converted to a cafe. The building was adopted onto the Local List by the Local Plan Committee on 24/08/20. An important WWII heritage asset. 4.7-inch gun casemates are now very rare and this is the sole remaining example of this type in the county.
